Apple Inc. looks like its having a not-so Merry Christmas.
Analysts have lowered iPhone X shipment projections for the first quarter of next year, citing signs of lackluster demand at the end of the holiday shopping season.
....
Apple has been counting on a redesigned 10th anniversary iPhone to boost shipments as its market value advances toward $1 trillion. The Cupertino, California-based company is facing new challenges from Samsung Electronics Co., which is quickly recovering from the Galaxy Note 7s recall after fires. In the meantime, Chinese brands such as Huawei, Oppo and Xiaomi are also luring away potential customers in China and other emerging markets such as India.
Apple is said to have trimmed its first-quarter sales forecast to 30 million units from 50 million, Taiwanese newspaper Economic Daily News reported, citing unidentified supply chain officials. It also said Hon Hai Precision Industry Co.s main iPhone X manufacturing hub in Zhengzhou, China, stopped recruiting workers. The company also known as Foxconn is the sole iPhone X assembler, and also makes the handsets in Shenzhen and Chengdu.

Whether this speculation has validity or not we will know when its quarterly earnings come out, but one thing is for certain, if the analysts get it wrong, they won't be called out for it

(14 posts)I think it's just an adjustment to having met the the initial surge demand.
I own AAPL stock and have an iPhone X.
Absolutely without pause - LOVE IT!
Most of my AAPL friends and co-workers and a couple of ex-Google Pixel owners have made the switch and they all love it.
A Samsung Galaxy S8+ goes for $825, so the $1000 isn't that far out-of-line. Young people live on their mobile phones ... they see the value in having such a powerful hand-held device.
Older people (and I'm 62) often don't use many of the available features.
If you don't SnapChat, Instagram, FaceTime, eMail, or FaceTime Live -- you probably don't need a $1000 phone.
My iPhone X is my link to live video chats with my grandson, my navigation system, my link to calls and texts to all of my friends, and countless other features.

(814 posts)If they offer a phone for the masses, then I would say that their growth prospects are good, since smart phones aren't going away, although this data shows global growth slowing a bit:

But if Apple is boxing themselves into the high end, I think that's going to be a problem for them in the long-term.

(17,130 posts)Sony usually isn't in peoples' minds when they're considering smart phones, but it's got everything: dual SIMs, micro-SD slot, headphone jack, best 4k HDR screen, excellent photos, slo-mo video, waterproof & dustproof, hi-resolution audio, prompt no-delay Android updates, and fast fast. $799, knocked down to $549, with an unexpected $100 gift I received, so I paid $449 plus tax.
My HTC "Flagship" 1 M8 died 3 months after the warranty ran out.
My Google Nexus 6P "Flagship" died a slow, grinding, pain-in-the-ass-to-operate-defective death. It was made by Huawei. No more Google or Huawei phones for me.
I'm as happy as I can be with my Sony "off-brand" phone - and I'm not feeding into the "charge 'em more and give 'em less" vogue these days.

(814 posts)I've never bought a phone on my own and taken it to a provider to set up, mostly because service providers have always provided me a free phone with a service plan. Since the providers seem to be charging for phones nowadays, would I save enough money to make it worthwhile to buy the phone on my own?

(17,130 posts)My regrettable experiences with Sprint made me seek out "alternative" service providers. Ting just piggybacks on Sprint or T-Mobile's network, but my bills are way lower, and Ting's customer service is exceptional. I don't mind paying retail for a phone if it means I can have lower bills and service from people I don't despise. Yes, I'm still feeding into the "big boys," so this may be illusory on my part, but it's the way I want to go.
