Investigation into ad-sales collaboration could pose setback in effort to acquire Tribune

Two House Democrats asked the Federal Communications Commission to investigate whether Sinclair Broadcast Group SBGI +5.19% broke laws by allegedly influencing ad sales at rival Tribune Media Co. TRCO -0.30% , another potential setback in the TV station owners’ effort to merge.
“An FCC investigation is warranted in light of recent reports that the Department of Justice is investigating whether the sales teams of Sinclair and Tribune were improperly coordinating regarding their advertising sales performance, resulting in higher rates,” U.S. Reps. Frank Pallone and Mike Doyle, members of the House subcommittee on communications and technology, wrote in a letter to FCC Chairman Ajit Pai.
The Wall Street Journal last month reported that the Department of Justice was examining whether Sinclair, Tribune and other TV-station owners coordinated efforts when their ad-sales teams communicated about their performances, potentially leading to higher rates for TV commercials.
An FCC spokeswoman said the agency received the letter from the congressmen and is reviewing the matter. ... Sinclair representatives couldn’t be reached to comment.
