Fred’s Inc. is closing more stores. ... The retailer said it is shuttering 104 “underperforming” stores as part of an “effort to rationalize its store footprint.” Eight of the closing locations are located in Alabama: Hanceville, Dothan, Aliceville, East Brewton, Robertsdale, Eclectic, Ashville and Prattville

"These additional store closures are a difficult, but necessary step in the continued restructuring of Fred's,” said Joseph Anto, Fred's Chief Executive Officer.

The chain announced in April it was closing 159 stores, including 19 in Alabama.

Fred’s operates some 300 stores in 11 states. ... The 104 impacted stores will close by the end of June.

The store and pharmacy were pretty popular as money saving outlets.

then Walgreen's bought out their pharmacy, almost overnight...very quickly, about 4 months ago, making it the 4th pharmacy to sell out to Walgreens here.

Fred's was still open as a store. Till last week, now it is closed.
