Thousands of spectators turned out Monday for Omaha's annual Labor Day Parade, the symbolic end-of-summer fling where union workers strut their stuff alongside giant balloons and high school bands.
Rather than floating filled with helium gas, however, the inflatable Fred Flintstone, dinosaur and other characters were puffed with air, tied to carts and wheeled down the route, victims of a helium shortage.
Kay Daubendiek's family staked out a section of concrete wall along Capitol Avenue near 13th Street, within reach of the flying candy. A well-aimed handful scattered on the cement at her daughter's feet.
That was a nice toss, Daubendiek said.
