Power to strike approved at Fairfax as part of bargaining

LOL! Check out the comments. Stupid wingnuts think they are going on strike.

Union members at General Motors’ Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kan., voted 90 percent in favor of authorizing a strike if a local contract agreement isn’t reached.

The vote doesn’t mean there will be a strike, but it does authorize the union leadership to call a strike if necessary in reaching a local agreement. George Ruiz, president of UAW Local 31, which has more than 3,000 members working at the Fairfax plant, said Friday that talks with management should take care of the issues, which would make a strike unnecessary.

Ruiz declined to comment on the issues involved as a courtesy to GM management, since negotiations won’t resume until Monday.

A local agreement can touch on issues such as transfers to other jobs at the plant. But it does not get involved in pay, benefits and other matters decided by a national contract.
