In Downtown Las Vegas, 3,500 members of the Culinary and Bartenders Unions work in the casinos on Fremont Street. Relatively unseen and usually little thought about, these working men and women make the hospitality industry in Las Vegas possible when they serve tens of thousands of locals and tourists each day.

The workers who make the beds and clean the bathrooms work hard and deserve fair trea
tment and respect. The bartenders who mix your fabulous cocktails on a busy night need their health insurance for themselves and their families. The kitchen staff who prep, cook and serve you dinner at the many fine eateries in the Downtown casinos want to ensure that their benefits are protected. They have never asked for a handout. They are asking for what they have earned by keeping Downtown a vibrant destination for tourists and locals alike as new investments are finally being made in the historical core of Las Vegas.

The Culinary and Bartenders Unions are proud to represent over 55,000 working men and women in Las Vegas. Working in a hotel-casino with a union contract has made it possible to sustain a middle class living standard for these workers and together they have raised the standards for all throughout Southern Nevada. A union contract provides a grievance procedure, health insurance, a pension and so much more.

Many Culinary families are able to save money and utilize the union’s housing partnership to buy their first home and send their children to college. In fact, there are many leaders who come from Culinary or Bartender Union families that serve Nevada politically and locally in communities across our great state.

In June, the economic portion of the current contracts expired. Downtown casinos owners have refused to pay an additional 15 cents per hour so the workers can continue to have health insurance and a pension. The workers are not even asking for a raise.

On Saturday, November 17, thousands of Culinary and Bartenders members along with supporters and allies from the community will picket in Downtown Las Vegas from 11am-8pm to make sure their health and retirement benefits are protected. We hope that as you (re)discover Downtown Las Vegas, please don't forget the workers who make it all possible.
