Stop and Shop Opens Hiring Center, Posts Ads for Scabs
>>>
The New England grocery store chain Stop and Shop has opened 14 hiring centers and placed ads in regional papers searching for replacement workers (scabs) in case of any work stoppage related to contract negotiations with its unions. There are 217 Stop and Shop stores in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Connecticut, and 40,000 of the grocery chains workers have signaled that they are prepared to strike over a clause in the new contract that stops offering major medical and prescription coverage at the end of 2013. There are five unions represented at the chain, but the five units of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) represented within the company are those who may strike and those that Stop and Shop is gearing up to replace.
