Attorneys' plan to form union on hold

By John Ferak

A group of 47 Douglas County deputy attorneys has backed off plans to form a union in light of a new pay-raise proposal.

The County Board will consider a plan to spend $400,000 to $500,000 to pay for raises for lower-paid attorneys in the County Attorney's Office and Public Defender's Office.

Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine has been urging the board to grant raises to keep his entry-level salaries comparable to those in Sarpy and Lancaster Counties.

Kleine is specifically seeking $200,000 to $300,000 to fund salary increases for about 30 of his 55 deputy attorneys. Board members discussed raises at last week's board meeting. A vote is expected within three weeks.
