It just became a really bad Christmas season for about 1000 workers.
THE major construction job in the Denver area, the new VA hospital, just got shut down. The contractor walked away last night saying the government has not provided them adequate funding or plans to finish the building. The lockdown came after the day shift went home. Tinners, electricians and plumbers are now unable to get their own tools from the site and thus, can't find another job without tools. This article only talks about the contractor and a VA, but my SO is in one of the unions affected and people are freaking out.

(22,845 posts)I know someone who works as a contractor for the VA in DC who says the entire agency is a disaster and should be shut down and rebuilt from the bottom up. I'm so sorry these folks lost their jobs.

(57,114 posts)this'll be cleared up in a week or two. The question is: will the GC pay for the time lost when they get more cash.

(28,479 posts)The plans the contractor has is for a $1B facility, but the VA only funded $600M. The contractor has already been paying out of pocket to the tune of $100M. The appeals court found the VA in breach of contract. The VA needs to cough up a LOT more money that they don't appear to have.
