Menard's contract threatens managers with 60% pay cut if union forms on their watch
It's no secret that John Menard is opposed to unions. But the Progressive magazine has obtained a copy of a contract agreement between Menard's home-improvement store chain and managers that enshrines the billionaire's anti-union stance in company policy.
The Progressive published a story Tuesday with wording from the contract that threatens Menards store managers with a 60-percent pay cut if they allow employees to vote in a union.
Here's the actual wording of the provision:
The Managers income shall be automatically reduced by sixty percent (60%) of what it would have been if a union of any type is recognized within your particular operation during the term of this Agreement. If a union wins an election during this time, your income will automatically be reduced by sixty percent (60%).

(25,270 posts)is giving me a reason not to shop their stores anymore. I can't believe that such a clause in a contract is legal.
I was happy to see a Menards open nearby, but that has now changed. I will concentrate my hardware purchases at my local True Value and Ace stores. I feel much more comfortable with them.

(3,544 posts)Let's see, you cut my salary 60%, and I'm gone, with or without a job. If it happens at 1 store, all managers would be gone within hours. I wonder how the workers bees can work without management? I personally can see the store shutting down, at least temporarily.
This is yet another example of the 1% controlling and destroying the middle class. I'm betting John and his cronies aren't going to vote for Bernie either.

(53,475 posts)So a little more than three years ago, when Menard wanted to back Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and help advance his pro-business agenda he found the perfect way to do so without attracting any attention: He wrote more than $1.5 million in checks to a pro-Walker political advocacy group that pledged to keep its donors secret, three sources directly familiar with the transactions told Yahoo News.
And it paid off ...
