NFL players are arguably the most high-profile union members in the United States.
When they go to work each Sunday (or Monday or Thursday night) millions of Americans watch from the comfort of their homes, a friends living room or the neighborhood sports bar.
As very public faces of the labor movement, NFL players, like New Orleans Saints Quarterback Drew Brees, have a unique opportunity to draw national attention to workers' rights.
Dave Zirin, sports editor for The Nation magazine, wrote a powerful column this week, Drew Brees, Union Power and the Big Payback, about why Brees, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year, has not received a firm contract from the Saints. He suggests Brees is getting payback for sticking by his union.
Zirin writes:
In fall 2010, it was Brees who led a procession onto the field in full view of the Sunday Night Football cameras with one finger in the air, a symbol that both teamsthe Saints and Vikingswere actually one team united against ownership. The voice of the NFL establishment, Al Michaels, a proud political conservative, condemned it from the NBC booth, sayingwith an eye roll, Theres nothing like a labor statement to start the season. As for the NFL owners, like the elephant who symbolizes their political affection, they dont forget. But Brees proceeded without concern for any kind of payback. After all, he brought a Super Bowl victory to New Orleans. He was untouchable. As the teams union representative and member of the NFLPA executive board, Brees remained outspoken and was one of the lead plaintiffs in the lockout lawsuits against the NFL.

On the Road
(20,783 posts)His contract negotiations have all been within the contract framework negotiated by the NFLPA.
Reportedly, the Saints are willing to make him the highest paid player in football, but that apparently isn't enough:
Report: Drew Brees Previously Turned Down NO's Offer to Be NFL's Top-Paid Player
Brees wants a contract that will pay him $23 million a year over the first three years of his new deal.... All told, the Saints are offering Brees a five-year deal worth $18 million a season.

Reportedly, Brees was 'livid' that the Saints might take advantage of the franchise tag provision in the contract and sign a one-year deal at $14.4M.

I am not a particular fan of the Saints, but this is a lot more than just being cheap on their part -- they only have $2.3M under the salary cap.

Brees is the most important player on the team, but signing him for the amount he is looking for might force the Saints to give up cut other key players, either now or over the next year or two. For a top Super Bowl contender with an aging QB, that hurts their chances for another championship. I don't blame management for trying to sign him for "only" $18M or threatening to use the franchise tag.
