Large Graffiti Carved at Arches National Park in Utah

By MICHELLE L. PRICE, ASSOCIATED PRESS
SALT LAKE CITY — Apr 28, 2016, 3:53 PM ET

Rangers at Utah's Arches National Park were investigating large graffiti Thursday that was carved so deeply into a famous red rock arch that it might be impossible to erase, officials said.

The carvings discovered by a park worker last week measure 5 or 6 feet across and include names and messages, park Superintendent Kate Cannon said.

The vandalism is part of a "tidal wave of graffiti" at Arches and other national parks in recent years, she said.

Two years ago, at least eight national parks in the West began the delicate task of cleaning up graffiti-like paintings left on famous, picturesque landscapes. The damage was discovered after images were shared on social media.

It's going to get worse. We had issues in YNP the last couple years... this is why I am no longer interested in working for NPS anymore, the uniformed rangers have little leverage and there are SO MANY people overwhelming the parks anymore. And social media is one of the drivers of the ignorant, "look what I got away with! I challenge everyone else to do something dumber/more destructive!"

There's no feasible way to confront it. I have gone to the mindset of, "some people are jerks" to "I hope they fall off a f"ing cliff and are eaten by carnivores!"

Sad but here we go, folks. It's almost over.

Of course, I can't hike as far as I used to, so enjoy much of the scenery from a distance. This is sickening. I assume everyone is enjoying the park like I am and then to know there are people that would actually do this. No, a $5000 fine is far too low and they should lose all privileges of entry to National Parks.. not sure how that could be accomplished, but I would be in favor of public shaming and their pictures posted at every entrance.
