[font size=3]TOLEDO, Ill. — The sun does more than warm Justin Holsapple’s fields. It also powers his farm.

He is among a growing number of farmers opting for solar power. His system was installed two years ago, and he’s pleased with his choice.

Holsapple has two systems on his Cumberland County farm. A ground unit produces 20 kilowatts and powers electric farm machinery. The other, installed on the roof of a farm building, meets the electric needs of his home. That one generates 44 kilowatts.

“I know some guys who have them on the ground, in pastures and stuff, and they put them up high enough off the ground that cattle can get under them and use them as shade,” Holsapple said. “Snow doesn’t stay on them very long; it slides right off.”
