Almost 90% of new power in Europe from renewable sources in 2016
Wind energy overtakes coal as the EUs second largest form of
power capacity but concerns remain over politicians enthusiasm
for renewables

Renewable energy sources made up nearly nine-tenths of new power added to Europes electricity grids last year, in a sign of the continents rapid shift away from fossil fuels.
But industry leaders said they were worried about the lack of political support beyond 2020, when binding EU renewable energy targets end.
Of the 24.5GW of new capacity built across the EU in 2016, 21.1GW or 86% was from wind, solar, biomass and hydro, eclipsing the previous high-water mark of 79% in 2014.
For the first time windfarms accounted for more than half of the capacity installed, the data from trade body WindEurope showed. Wind power overtook coal to become the EUs second largest form of power capacity after gas, though due to the technologys intermittent nature, coal still meets more of the blocs electricity demand.

(33,525 posts)...is a big reason why the failed and useless so called "renewable energy" industry has soaked the world economy for more than two trillion dollars in ten years with the result that the concentrations of dangerous fossil fuel waste in the atmosphere is increasing at the fastest rate ever observed, now routinely at or exceeding 3.00 ppm per year.
The result is clear and unambiguous. We are now well above above 400 ppm and no one alive today will ever see a measurement below it again, particular when we keep cheering for this useless crap.
The two forms of so called "renewable energy" about which so much cheering goes on - usually powered by computers running on dangerous gas and and dangerous coal - wind and solar, have never, not once, in 50 years of wild eyed cheering for them, ever produced 1% of the world energy demand. The solar industry, in particular, has never produced 2 of the 570 exajoules of energy humanity consumes each year.
