New science shows killer heat waves will sweep the world...

Radio Ecoshock podcast:

SIMONE RUSSO – EXTREME HEAT

New science shows killer heat waves will sweep the world as the globe warms. Are you ready for 55 degrees C, or 131 Fahrenheit? Nobody is.

Our guest is Simone Russo, a geophysicist working at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, located in Ispra Varese, in Northern Italy. Simone is the lead author in a new paper published in the journal “Nature”. The title is “Humid heat waves at different warming levels.

Inhuman heat predicted by new science from Europe. Lead author Simone Russo explains 55 degree C (131 F) heat for U.S., India & China. From Ottawa, climate scientist Paul Beckwith walks us through the forces behind record storms, fires, and floods. Radio Ecoshock 170913

Record-breaking Harvey, followed by the largest hurricane ever seen in the Atlantic, with Hurricane Jose right behind. Add the West engulfed in fire, millions flooded out in Asia – who can keep up in a destabilized climate? We’re going to try this week on Radio Ecoshock. We start with critical new science from Italy about the incredible heat to come. Then our regular guest scientist Paul Beckwith paints the big picture missing in the media. It’s radio that tries hard, in trying times.

We as a species are doomed. Anything larger than a house cat is likely to be dead by 2100 or 2150 at the latest.

Temperatures are only one small part of the problem. The dominos that fall after thresholds for feedback loops are crossed are the REAL issue.

Soil erosion and desertification are terms people should be terrified of instead of "ISIS" or "Radical Islamic Terrorism". The REAL threat to civilization is not screaming "Allahu Akbar!", they are wearing Armani suits and jet setting the globe in places like Davos, and New Zealand and private islands around the world.

I had hoped to be dead before the true horror of what we have wrought on this Earth became apparent...and unless I shuffle off this mortal coil soon, I will not be spared the witness of it all. Things are bad already, another recession is imminent and society is unprepared for the aftermath. Our species, capable of so much, is in the end to be felled by a lack of imagination and a paradigm of destruction instead of creation.

I am irreligious - I have no use for any of them, at all - but the sad thing is better adherence to the precepts of human faith systems instead of lustful, slavish devotion to capitalism would have possibly saved us all. In the end, to the billionaires and titans of industry, I wish I could be there to watch you idiots try to eat gold, drink silver and breathe platinum...but suffice it to say this...no one, no one at all is immune from fundamental truths such as the need for food, shelter, water and community.

It didn'y have to be this way, but humanity in total is simply too stupid and too maleable to the will of evil men to survive.

Life may be rare in the universe, but intelligent life is certainly much rarer. And rarest of all, if, in fact, it's even possible, would be intelligent life that survives long enough to escape its home planet. It's no mystery to me why we have yet to find any evidence of life elsewhere in the universe.

I read it here on DU.

My husband & I marvel, everyday now, how we won the LOTTO when it came to when & where we were born. We witnessed something few humans ever have or will. When I think of the selection of food in a typical US grocery store, it's stunning.

Sorry but I'm curious to how that would apply.

Most religious people I know, Christian and otherwise, are the most adamant deniers. "God would not let that happen to us" to the crazier, "we'll be raptured as non-believers burn in hell on earth."

Again, I'm sorry I do not follow the logic of how the "Golden Rule" would keep the Earth from burning when most of these people think they can have all the children they can support. Whenever you see large families, you may be assured that these people follow some faith system.

Its going to happen too fast for humans to evolve with some type of scaly armor over our delicate skin. We will only be able to go out at night, if we go out at all. Those that can will go underground. Or we go back to being cave dwellers.

That's my .02.

when our own countrymen start moving north. Will we be as mean spirited to our own refugees as we are to the rest of the world's?

The trigger will probably be a significant reduction in food production, and the large jump in food costs. The "flash drought" has basically wiped out all farms in the Dakotas and Idaho this year. Here is SE Ohio they were not able to plant until late June because of a very wet spring. The heat wave/drought in southern Europe has wiped out ag there. We continue to get these in the rest of the grain belt here, and in Russia and Asia and we will not be able to continue to feed the 7 billion and growing population. If we have an economic collapse and depression, will the food delivery to all of the supermarkets be disrupted. Most have less than a weeks worth of inventory in store. Hungry people get aggressive in a hurry.

The evidence is pretty clear that the temperature disruptions in the arctic have lead to a complete deformation in the traditional jet streams. This is not going to get better. We are putting more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every day, and trapping more and more total heat, also not getting any better. The Ice sheets in Greenland and the Antarctic will take a century of two to melt, but we may see civilization crushing changes in literally a matter of years. We are already seeing it happen now. How many years of Half Trillion dollar hurricanes and fires and crop losses can we sustain?

2100 Ha! Try 2030....

One useful thing that will happen I predict is that NASA and other international space agencies will get huge last-minute funding to help deter warming. It won't save us but it will help postpone our total demise.

PR and the US VI may be hit as a cat 4 as early as this week. These islands are still devastated from Irma.

Will have to watch mainland coast for next week.

And heading right for St Croix where they had been basing rescue operations for other islands devastated by Irma.

This went from a tropical depression to a Category 5 in about 24 hours.
