Ford to launch diesel truck to grab fuel economy edge

Ford is debuting a diesel engine for the F-150 pickup truck for the first time.

The F-150, part of the F-series pickup truck line, which qualifies as the nation's best-selling vehicle, will get 30 miles per gallon on the highway while retaining the most powerful towing and hauling capabilities on the market.

“We know people are sensitive to fuel economy,” said Dave Filipe, Ford's vice president of global powertrain engineering.

A high mileage rating is a “Holy Grail for the truck customer,” he said, because die-hard customers are towing heavy loads all the time and want to save money at the pump.

Nissan and Dodge now have half tons with Cummins available, Chevy will offer their diesel next year. Nice to see automakers getting on board with half ton pickups being offered with efficient, much cleaner diesels. Just hope they don't fuck with the numbers to make them look better ala VW.

I would retrofit my 2nd gen Dodge if there were a hybrid engine available, but even those are a ways away.
