TenneT transmits to German grid 47% more North Sea wind power in 2017
January 15 (Renewables Now)

TenneT Holding BV, the Netherlands-based operator of large parts of the German grid, announced today that in 2017 it has transmitted 47% more North Sea offshore wind power than a year earlier.

TenneT said in a statement that a total of 15.97 TWh of wind power was transmitted from the North Sea last year, compared with 10.83 TWh in 2016. Offshore and onshore combined, the country benefited from 100.67 TWh of wind power production in 2017, with North Sea offshore wind having a 15.9% share. The total figure includes 1.49 TWh of output coming from the Baltic Sea, which is not a TenneT grid area.

Having hooked a total of 5,332 MW of offshore wind power transmission capacity, TenneT already meets over 82% of the German federal government’s expansion target for 6,500 MW of offshore wind by 2020, said Lex Hartman, member of the company’s executive board.

TenneT expects to connect to the grid two additional systems by the end of 2019, thus increasing the transmission capacity in the North Sea to 7,132 MW. Four additional connections should be installed by 2025 for a total transmission capacity of more than 10,000 MW.
