60% Of AZ In Level 3 (Extreme) Drought; Record 5/6/18 High 106F; Avg. For Date - 92F

It’s not surprising to anyone who has been paying attention to the wildfires popping up around the state that Arizona is in the midst of an unusual dry spell.

Even an early May episode of snow and rain isn’t expected to put a dent in the drought that grips Arizona.

The latest map from the U.S. Drought Monitor shows an expanding area of extreme drought, the second-highest category, through most of central Arizona compared to the April 3 map.

And nearly 10 percent of the state (mostly in the northeast) is experiencing exceptional drought, the highest level, compared to a month ago.

EDIT

The normal high temperature on May 6 in Phoenix averages 92 degrees. Sunday exceeded that by 14 degrees.

Temperatures are expected to hover over triple digits for the next week, however none of those days are expected to be record breaking.

On Thursday, temperatures peaked at 83 degrees. According to the weather bureau, highs may not duck back under 90 until October.
