How Bad Is The Camp Fire? Smoke Inside The Arena During Kings-Lakers Game

When the Kings and Los Angeles Lakers took the court Saturday evening at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, smoke from the Camp Fire could be seen within the building.

The Camp Fire is the most destructive wildfire in California's history. At least 25 people are dead, officials said Saturday, and most of the city of Paradise in Butte County is destroyed. Cal Fire estimates that over 6,400 homes are destroyed, and more than 105,000 acres are burned.

A Kings spokesperson told ESPN that they were aware of the smoke, and asked attendees to keep the doors closed as much as possible during the game. When NBC Sports California's James Ham left the arena late Saturday, smoke from the fire was still visible.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Smoke from a wildfire raging in Butte County -- known as the Camp Fire -- billowed into downtown Sacramento and was visible above the court at the Golden 1 Center before and during the Kings' game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday.

"We are aware that there is a smoke problem," a Kings spokesman told ESPN shortly before tipoff.

To combat the conditions, arena workers manning the entrances where ticket holders arrived were instructed to keep the doors closed as much as possible during the pregame window, the spokesman said.

"Not to sound dumb, but this kind of snuck up on everybody," Kings coach Dave Joerger said. "From wherever you're coming in from [you notice the smoke]. Today, I immediately started calling our staff: 'How bad is it downtown? What's going on here?' It's just a really sad deal."
