NOME — Pete Kaiser, who honed his skills mushing dogs on the trails around his hometown of Bethel, claimed victory in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race early Wednesday. Joar Leifseth Ulsom of Norway followed about 12 minutes later, and Jessie Royer finished hours later in third.

Went to the first second and third grade there from 1958 through 1959. From what little I could see of Nome in the photos, doesn't look like it has changed all that much. You could sled down Chicken Hill and ride the Bering Sea ice for a quarter of a mile during the winter, and during the summer you can go down to the seawall and go swimming, and yes, I was completely oblivious to the Iditarod because I was out having too much fun.
