Camp Lejeune: 900 Buildings With Missing Walls, Roofs 7 Months After Hurricane Florence

?w=500&h=281

More than six months after Hurricane Florence ravaged North Carolina, hundreds of buildings at Camp Lejeune and two other nearby Marine Corps installations remain frozen in time, with walls still caved in and roofs missing. The Marines say they need $3.6 billion to repair the damage to more than 900 buildings at Camp Lejeune, Marine Corps Air Station New River, and Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point caused by the storm and catastrophic flooding in its aftermath. And while they have torn down soggy, moldy walls, put tarps on roofs and moved Marines into trailers, so far they have not received a penny from the federal government to fix the damage.

Now the Marine Corps’ top officer is warning that readiness at Camp Lejeune — home to one third of the Corps’ total combat power — is degraded and “will continue to degrade given current conditions.” In a recent memo to Navy Secretary Richard Spencer, Commandant Gen. Robert Neller cited, among other “negative factors,” the diversion of resources to the border, where the Trump administration has sent active-duty troops to patrol and plans to use military funding to pay for a wall.

EDIT

In a statement to NBC News, Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., said it is “unacceptable” that “Camp Lejeune and other North Carolina military bases are still waiting on disaster relief we first requested last fall.” Burr’s fellow North Carolina Republican, Sen. Thom Tillis, agreed, telling NBC News in a written statement that “Camp Lejeune suffered significant damage from Hurricane Florence and Senators Tillis and Burr are working with Congressional appropriators to secure additional federal relief to ensure training and readiness will not be impacted in the long-term and the base can make a complete recovery.”

At Camp Lejeune’s Second Marine Expeditionary Force headquarters, roughly half the structures received significant structural damage and most of the roofs were blown off. They are still covered with blue tarps. Second MEF — or II MEF, as it is usually known — is one of three MEFS around the world, and represents a third of the Corps ready combat strength.

Trump's wall. They purposely defied the House, and may never get the funding for anything they want in the future, just so Trump's desires for the ridiculous wall were satiated.

The end stages of capitalism are just not compatible with democracy.

and it requires 3 to keep one on station. We do need far less money spent on defense overall.

Several years DoD warned climate change would have an impact on mission objectives. Them What Be In Charge failed to factor in the impact a future CinC would have. "Fuck 'em. I want my wall."

Any military base near the ocean, at risk from climate change, needs to be closed and moved if there isn’t a specific reason why it has to be located there.

We have plenty of space here in Michigan for a nice, big fat shore installation with Marine Lansing craft areas. Bring your hovercraft and ships to the shores of Lake Huron and we will give you all the readiness training you need, with NONE of the hurricanes, flooding tidewaters, or alligators, for that matter.

Camp LeJune is destroyed. Close it.

The Florida F-22 base - Tyndall, is destroyed. Close it.

They closed Homested AFB when a hurricane ran through it. We need to stop throwing good money into hurricane zones.

Sell the ocean front property to some rich private developer and let’s move everything to a safer zone.

They need to be demanding to know why the Trump administration has not taken steps to fix the base. They need to demand why the Trump Administration wants to take money away from the military for the wall while our men and women in uniform suffer, while our military preparedness suffers. Democrats need to take over the mantle of the party who cares the military.

I would love to see the House Democrats put forth a bill to fund the repairs of Camp LeJeune and see if the Rethugs dare to vote against it, if McConnell dares to refuse to put it to a vote in the Senate.

The Democrats are trying to their best with bills like HB 1. But instead of trying to pass giant bills all the time why not pick some very specific, one item bills that anybody can understand and bring them up to vote. Pepper the Rethugs with single issue bills. It is the old adage, keep it simple stupid. Think of it as a series of yes/no questions which would make if difficult for Rethugs to twist the meanings of. Rethugs are either for or against something. If Democrats pick the issues that the people overwhelmingly are in favor of they could end up making the Rethugs look like the thugs they are.

Then identify key Democrats to be the talking face of each bill. It would alllow the Democrats to laser focus on different voting groups to try to win them over.

It is really hard for me to feel bad about the demise of a military base. We have wasted most of our treasure on these worldwide boondoggles while we taxpaying citizens do not get benefits. Perhaps this “camp” would make an excellent bird refuge when flooded.

At this point, I'll bet the mold and mildew is so bad that the repair AND mitigation costs will be higher than demolition and rebuilding.

Once the mold gets a foothold, it's almost impossible and very costly to get rid of.
