Dr Susan Crockford, who says Polar Bears are doing fine, gets let go from Univ of Victoria, Canada

I have run into articles by her online, and am happy to hear she no longer has a position at the University.

UVic students will no longer benefit from her expertise, and her ability to apply for research grants has come to a screeching halt. In May, the Anthropology Department withdrew her Adjunct Professor status, depriving her of a university affiliation.

Crockford describes her expulsion as “an academic hanging without a trial, conducted behind closed doors.” After being renewed unanimously in 2016 for a three-year term, her adjunct status was not renewed the next time around.

Crockford is the author of a popular blog, polarbearscience.com, as well as five books about these animals. Polar Bear Facts and Myths has been translated into four languages. She says that, contrary to the claims of environmental activists, polar bears are currently thriving and are at no risk of extinction from climate change.

On a related note, here is a 3 minute interview with Geoff York, Senior Conservation Director with Polar Bears Intl by Irene Quaile of Deutsche Welle, Germany's international broadcaster.

Living Planet: Ice loss catastrophic for polar bears

Climate change and higher-than-average temperatures are causing glaciers and sea ice to thaw at alarming rates. That's a huge problem for polar bear populations, which rely on sea ice for their survival.

Been there, done that. You don't know what classes you're going to have from term to term, and thus what your income will be.

Strange she would publicly take such unorthodox positions with such tenuous status.

EDIT

Unsurprisingly, they’re a little upset that the University of Victoria decided not to renew Crockford’s position, which came with no salary, involved no teaching, and was mostly symbolic. However, the position did give Crockford access to the library and a sliver of credibility. The appearance that she was a serious enough academic to be endorsed by a real university is something she could use to try and get research grants, dovetailing with deniers’ parasitic need to boost their own credibility by attaching themselves to legitimate aspects of academia.

CFACT referred to the move as an “ideological purge,” and an op-ed in the Canadian Financial Post quoted Crockford calling it “an academic hanging without a trial.” Valerie Richardson opened her totally-not-biased coverage in the Washington Times with the lede “Nobody has done more to sink the claim that climate change is endangering polar bears than zoologist Susan Crockford — and she may have paid for it with her job.”

But an unpaid, non-teaching adjunct position is hardly a job. While it is true that nobody has done more to attack the claim that polar bears need cold, Crockford sure hasn’t sunk it.

Deniers will of course try and spin this into a free speech on campus issue, even though it obviously isn’t. Crockford wasn’t being paid by the university and is still perfectly free to continue doing her blog-level polar bear population science. But she’ll have to soldier on without her U-Vic affiliation, which is a major loss to her effort to seed denial propaganda, and the real reason for all the commotion in climate denial land. For all their bluster about how liberal colleges are the bane of human existence, deniers are desperate for the credibility that comes with a university affiliation.

Nice to know others are aware of this. Nobody has really come up with an explanation of her motives, other than making a small amount of money from the climate change deniers who use her work.
