PG&E warns it could cut power to more than 2 million people beginning Saturday night

HEALDSBURG, Calif. — Pacific Gas & Electric said Friday that it would probably begin cutting off power to 850,000 Northern California customers — more than 2 million people — on Saturday night as historic winds returned to the region.

It would be the largest wind-related blackout yet, affecting 36 counties.

Despite a brief respite from strong winds Friday, firefighters struggled to make progress against a 21,900-acre wildfire in Sonoma County that continued to burn out of control, as even fiercer weekend winds loomed.

The utility said it was aware of safety hazards that Geyserville residents faced as they evacuated their homes and fled from the Kincade fire in the darkness caused by the outages.

The Kincade fire has burned 21,900 acres in northern Sonoma County and was only 5% contained as of Friday afternoon. The entire town of Geyserville and vineyards in the region were ordered to evacuate, though some stayed, using generators for power. Fire officials said 49 structures, including 21 homes, were destroyed and the Geysers geothermal facilities run by Calpine Corp. reported some damage.

the state steps in and somehow shields them from liability. That is their goal here, despite the lip service they pay to public safety.

Even though it IS true that -- to literally nobody's surprise -- their unfortunately-designed and inadequately-maintained equipment is more dangerous when energized than when not energized.

I got a funny feeling we are going to get power cut off as we are near the Kincade fire (Geyserville).

From its weather to the people to its politicians (eg Pelosi, Shiff, Newsom, Harris, etc) to Hollywood to pretty much everything. I was at the Mojave and Death Valley last week and cant to go back! But, this third-world-level utility situation where they are having to do blackouts is ridiculous! They should have never allowed their infrastrucutre to degrade like this. I'm not even a Californian and this pisses; I cant imagine how I'd take it if I lived there!

BTW, I paod $4.65/gallon for regular unleaded in Baker on Sunday. I couldnt afford living there!

Utilities alone are not to blame, but obscene salaries and bonuses for top admins make what's bad already just outrageous.

It will take a long time and constant care and higher rates to get the grid safe and modernized, safe and resilient, all the while things getting dryer and customers losing patience.

Efforts need to be redoubled and these shut downs are important, despite the anger they inspire.

The terrible Camp Fire in Paradise might have been avoided if the company went ahead with a Public Safety Power Shutoff that was planned for that day almost one year ago.
