Goldman Sachs will not finance oil drilling in Arctic Wildlife Refuge
Goldman Sachs has become the first big U.S. bank to announce it will not finance fossil fuel development in Arctic Alaska, and devote resources to climate transition.
"This includes but is not limited to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge," the bank said in a statement.
The Trump Administration has moved to fast track oil leasing on the 1.25 million acre Coastal Plain of the refuge, which is major polar bear habitat and the calving ground for the Porcupine Caribou Herd. A backdoor provision in Republicans' 2017 tax bill gave a green light to development that would bring haul roads, pipelines and drilling platforms to the pristine region.
Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, an advocate for "opening up" the Refuge, told Fox News, "We do a lot of business with Goldman Sach's: We're going to have to evaluate that, have a discussion with them."
