Norway records warmest ever January day at 19C - 66F - after Scotland has UK's warmest Dec temp

Western Norway is experiencing a rare heatwave for early January, at a time when temperatures should normally be below freezing.

The highest temperature of 19C (66F) - more than 25C above the monthly average - was measured in the village of Sunndalsora.

Data suggests a temperature of 18.7C was reached at Achfary, in the Highlands of Scotland, on 28 December.

If validated, it would be the hottest day of the month on record in Britain.

It was recorded at 03:00 GMT on Sunday 29 December. It is the highest on record for 29, 30 or 31 December.

These are all attributed to the Foehn Effect - being downwind from mountains. That's 62 Fahrenheit, at about the latitude of Juneau, in the middle of a December night (11 hours after sunset, at this time of year).
