And Again: Massive Fire 8km From Canberra's S. Suburbs; 40C+ Days And High Winds On The Way
Canberrans are being urged to stop clogging potential evacuation routes by participating in what the ACT's Emergency Services Commissioner has labelled "disaster tourism". Residents in Canberra's south have been warned that they "aren't out of the woods yet" as an out-of-control bushfire continues to burn in Namadgi National Park south of Canberra.
But Emergency Services Agency Commissioner Georgeina Whelan said the problem had been exacerbated by residents in Canberra's north heading to the city's south to photograph the blaze and the smoke plume.
The fire has burned through more than 10,000 hectares in the remote Orroral Valley and is currently 8 kilometres from Canberra's southern-most suburb of Banks. It is currently at watch and act, after last night burning at emergency level and threatening the village of Tharwa.
ACT Emergency Services Agency incident controller Matthew Shonk said he did not expect the fire to return to emergency level today. But with a looming heatwave and temperatures forecast to top 40 degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday, Superintendent Shonk said conditions were "worrying".
