"Some Plumes Were A Kilometer Or More Wide . . . The Concentration Was 100X Higher Than Normal"

In an exclusive interview with The Independent, Igor Semiletov, of the Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that he has never before witnessed the scale and force of the methane being released from beneath the Arctic seabed.

"Earlier we found torch-like structures like this but they were only tens of metres in diameter. This is the first time that we've found continuous, powerful and impressive seeping structures, more than 1,000 metres in diameter. It's amazing," Dr Semiletov said.

"I was most impressed by the sheer scale and high density of the plumes. Over a relatively small area we found more than 100, but over a wider area there should be thousands of them."

"In a very small area, less than 10,000 square miles, we have counted more than 100 fountains, or torch-like structures, bubbling through the water column and injected directly into the atmosphere from the seabed," Dr Semiletov said. "We carried out checks at about 115 stationary points and discovered methane fields of a fantastic scale – I think on a scale not seen before. Some plumes were a kilometre or more wide and the emissions went directly into the atmosphere – the concentration was a hundred times higher than normal."

What is the situation like now? Surely it is even worse. This is so scary.

as when the oil and gas produced by that drilling is burned, which releases carbon, which heats the earth, which leads to further melting, which releases more methane, which heats the earth, which leads to further melting, etc.

This is going to play right into the hands of the geoengineering people that want to scatter dust in the upper atmosphere, etc.

Edit: By the way, thanks much for scaring the shit out of me this morning. 'preciate it.

Things seem to be changing too fast already, and the changes are still accelerating.

Geoengineering won't cut it because the problems we've caused on the planet extend so far beyond simple climate alterations. Even within the scope of climate geoengineering, it feels like the problem is already out of control.

I've been warning about collapse-scale problems since 2005, and this is far beyond anything I expected to see before 2020.

Elvis has left the building, and there's no point beating ourselves up with the Coulda-Woulda-Shoulda stick. Let's just get another bag of popcorn and settle in for the main feature: "Tilting at Windmills" with Don Corleone Quixote.

The news keeps getting better and better, huh? I wonder if they'll try to capture it and make a profit off of the natural gas even as it's killing us.
