So it turns out there is no aether.
In 1895, believing that light waves traveled in some invisible medium was a perfectly respectable theory with tons of supporting evidence. Oh there were problems, but
By 1920, with all the evidence supporting Relativity coming in, holding onto the aether theory was a little pig-headed, but still understandable.
But its now September 1945, two atomic bombs have been exploded over Japan, all thinking people are debating what were going to do with the new atomic physics, and youre still telling us and decision makers that light really travels on an invisible medium called aether.
You know what the real debate is now? How long do we continue to debate YOU and not look silly.

(17,865 posts)we are living with the effects and solid proof of AGW in 30 years? Their names will be cursed and laughed about - a heck of a legacy.

the backlash hits the people who have caused it while they are still alive.
There is little point in "cursing their memory" if the bastards lived a long & luxurious
life, protected from the direct effects of their selfish greed. It would be far better for
them to be hauled up in front of the victims so that they can see, hear & feel the
pain that they have caused.

But, due to stranded costs in old fossil fuel infrastructure, change on the scale needed to not push the planet past the tipping point may be politically impossible now.

(10,618 posts)Science changes, not because scientists change their mind, but because the old scientists, die out.
(Or something to that effect).
Scientists are a particularly stubborn lot.

I Googled the full quote as:
"a new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it."
