Obama considering MIT physicist Moniz for energy secretary

President Barack Obama is considering naming nuclear physicist Ernest Moniz, one of his science and energy advisers, as the next energy secretary, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday.

...snip...

Moniz is a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, a group that gives Obama recommendations on the role of science and innovation in the economy.

...snip...

From his time in the Clinton administration, he has experience managing the department's oversight of a chain of national laboratories and the U.S. stockpile of nuclear weapons. After Obama made good on a first-term campaign promise to shut down the proposed Yucca Mountain nuclear waste site in Nevada, he named Moniz to a "Blue Ribbon" panel that looked for a new approach for storing toxic nuclear waste.

He's also a proponent of SMRs and the author of the post-Fukushima piece - "Why We Still Need Nuclear Power"

He would be a great pick!

Particularly interesting considering how qualified the rumored nominee is.

5. He's supported by the largest US nuclear company. Rahm E and David A worked for Exelon - legal.

He obviously has the knowledge and experience to do the job well and understands their field. Why wouldn't they support him?

But your statement was that Exelon should be pleased with the "return on their investment". This is a clear accusation that their political contributions are resulting in the selection of a cabinet-level official friendly to them who would not otherwise have been chosen. That's the definition of corruption and you're pointing the finger at both the Obama and Clinton administrations when you make the accusation.

7. Corruption not implied, simply inferred. Just your suspious imagination at work.

Corporate investment in building the careers of cooperative candidates is as American as Apple Pie and bank robbery. Right or wrong?

2. I'm not thrilled about the plugging of natural gas though

They call it a "bridge fuel" but I worry that there will be too much "bridge building" (i.e. full speed ahead on extracting natural gas) and not enough work on what should lie on the other side of that metaphorical bridge. In Moniz Obama will clearly have someone who knows his way around Washington and seems to be on board with the "all of the above" energy strategy, but I'd like to see more focus on something other than fossil fuel extraction.

when cleaner options become available. It's all in the national interest, of course.
