Driest Jan-Feb Period On Record In California's Northern Sierra - SacBee

California is poised to shatter an all-time weather record by notching the driest January-February period in recorded history across the northern Sierra Nevada.

The northern Sierra is crucial to statewide water supplies because it is where snowmelt accumulates to fill Shasta and Oroville reservoirs. These are the largest reservoirs in California and the primary storage points for state and federal water supply systems.

If February concludes without additional storms – and none are expected – the northern Sierra will have seen 2.2 inches of precipitation in January and February, the least since record-keeping began in the region in 1921. That is well below the historical average of 17.1 inches.

The dry conditions have not been limited to the northern Sierra. January and February have produced 1.32 inches of rain in the city of Sacramento, ranking as the third driest since record-keeping began in 1850, said Johnnie Powell, a forecaster at the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

...it's basically been 'spitting' on us...but the grass is visible and the trees are budding too..haven't heard the cheeseburger bird or seen a robin, but I expect early spring to show up soon.

I know everyone is scared and upset about the water supply, but I personally have LOVED the milder winters the past couple years! (been here 20 years, I have been buried up to my ass for many winters). And March/April is usually wetter, February is usually seen as a 'false spring' up here....
We have seen far worse droughts in the early 90s, when Lake Tahoe's level was so low you could walk out 1/4 mile on the sand before getting to the water.
The one thing is that our little Mtn town is gonna be hurting economically more so than it already has. If this continues, the ski resorts will have to retool their programs to host Mtn biking in the off season and maybe we'll start hosting more 'eco-tourism'...but the ability of people in city council to have that foresight is probably a long shot.

In parts of the west. The drought, bug trees, and Possibly firemen are layed off due to sequester could make this a long hot summer in many ways.
