Mahatma Gandhi and the evolution of the global warming response

One of Gandhi's most famous quotes, which pops up here on a regular basis:

First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win.

I've been having it out with oil industry representatives on other forums, and Gandhi's statement has an analogue in the train of responses I've been getting. The argument has evolved something like this:

1) Global warming is a liberal hoax designed to make Al Gore richer. Move on.
2) Global warming? Haha...and this is not real snow on my back porch.
3) Some academics in England once deliberately skewed their data (standalone rationale which can be sprinkled in with others non-sequentially).
4) Global warming might be happening, but it's the result of sunspots/natural variations/Obama policies gone awry/God punishing homosexuality/crop circles.
5) The global climate is getting warmer. It might have some human causes, but that's highly controversial (I know this, because the phrase "Global Warming" is always followed by a question mark on the Fox News crawl).
6) The global climate is getting warmer and it's caused mostly by humans. It's China's and India's fault. Please pass the coal.
7) The global climate is getting warmer and it's caused mostly by humans. How long will it take? What does it really mean to me? Is asking obtuse, general questions helpful for anything besides prolonging inaction?

This is roughly where we stand. If inaction is prolonged (it's looking more likely) I expect this train to proceed as follows:

8) Global warming is real. It's caused mostly by humans, and is starting to have some consequences. If more people used CFLs like me we could nip it in the bud, and it's not worth jeopardizing the Continued Economic Recovery over.
9) Phew. It's really f*cking hot outside and all of my grandfather's fields have turned to dust. I think we should reconsider Keystone XL and other enviornmentally disastrous policies which are too late to reconsid-...wha? Another tornado alert? You must be kidding.
10) Global warming is real. It's caused by humans, and there's little we can do about it.

"And then you win." I continue to hope beyond reason this is possible, but reason suggests that the global warming story will probably have a similar ending to Gandhi's.

Of course there will be heartwarming stories.. a coral reef, forest, mountaintop, maybe even a species.. saved here and there. And these will be the stories most humans pay attention to. All the 24/7/365 destruction they're already happily ignoring will get worse and worse and worse, week after week, mark my word.
