Big Oil, renewable fuels advocates point fingers at each other for high gas prices

Gasoline prices remain stuck above $3.50 per gallon despite the highest monthly domestic oil production in 21 years.

Big Oil and renewable fuels advocates on Wednesday blamed each other for motorists’ continued pain at the pump.

Big oil companies said the federal Renewable Fuel Standard, which requires that ethanol account for at least 10 percent of the 136 billion gallons of gas consumed by U.S. automobiles each year, is driving up fuel prices.

The ethanol industry, on the other hand, says Big Oil is trying to divert attention from high gas prices. Because ethanol is cheaper than gasoline, they say blaming biofuels is the rhetorical equivalent of a dry hole.

Playing the blame game here doesn't resolve the issue of why gas prices are so high.

That's rich. Oil companies blaming renewables? gtar100 Mar 2013 #1
That's only the phrasing: Oil companies are blaming (corn) ethanol companies, not true "renewables". Nihil Mar 2013 #2

Are these oil execs even human? Seems the industry attracts and sustains those with no loftier goals in life than to be rich.

i.e., it's a squabble between the oil corporations and the agricultural corporations
(and their respective PR/marketing/CYA lobbies) in the attempt to deflect the
public's blame onto the genuine renewable energy producers/supporters (that have
just about no involvement in the fuel price levels) whilst maintaining *both* of
their respective sets of profits ... win-win for both sides of that particular game.
