Russia's Investigative Committee, modelled on the FBI, will question the activists. Six Britons are among them.
Their ship, the Arctic Sunrise, is being towed to the port of Murmansk.
Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin said "all those who assaulted the platform, regardless of nationality, will be prosecuted".

ORIGINAL/COMPLETE VERSION: Dedicated to the heroic long-time Russian political prisoner, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn-who wrote the books The Gulag Archipelago, 1,2,3 about life in the Siberian prison system;
----
Pays the price, works the seasons through
Frozen days, he thinks of you
Cold as ice but he burns for you
Mother Russia, can't you hear him too?
Mother's son, freedom's overdue
Lonely man, he thinks of you
He isn't done, only lives for you
Mother Russia, can't you hear him too?
Punished for his written thoughts
Starving for his fame
Working blindly, building blocks
Number for a name, his blood flows frozen to the snow
Red blood, white snow
He knows frozen rivers won't flow
So cold, so true
Mother Russia--he cries for you...

(13,508 posts)Greenpeace attempted to board an Arctic oil platform in international waters
with a small team of unarmed volunteers who were "dissuaded" (= scared off)
by small-arms fire from the platform.
The Russians actually boarded a ship in international waters with a large
air & sea armed attack, damaged the ship, assaulted the crew, hijacked the
ship, kidnapped the crew and transported them to Murmansk for interrogation.
Who are the pirates?
(I left Greenpeace decades ago but they still deserve better than this crap.)
Greenpeace crazies attempted to illegally board a Russian flagged vessel and retreated when the Russians fought back.
Russian security forces then boarded and seized the pirate vessel. The perpetrators were transported to Murmansk to face charges.
It looks like the Greenpeace loonies are the pirates.

(21,088 posts)The world has locked itself into a techno-industrial system that needs a constant amount of energy to maintain what was built in the past, plus an additional increment every year for growth. If the growth of energy use stagnates, things begin to fall apart. Anyone that tries to get in the way of growth - especially in energy supplies - can expect to be crushed.
To the system the environment is just a a bag of resources for human use, with a "net present value" tag attached to it. In the face of the system's underlying and overwhelming exploitation imperative, the wishes of some greens amount to a fart in a hurricane.
I wish it were otherwise, but it's not. It will take a global collision with a critical physical limit to change things.
