Tesla's Musk wants to create batteries for home energy storage:

Tesla's Elon Musk: On Creating A 'Cool' Battery System For Home Energy Storage

by: Ucilia Wang - 5/07/2014 @ 8:32PM

Tesla Motors TSLA +1.05%, which plans to build a giant lithium-ion battery factory, is keenly interested in the emerging energy storage market, where home and businesses owners might want to buy battery systems for backup power or for managing solar electricity generation and use.

~Snip~

“We are trying to figure out what would be a cool stationary (battery) pack,” Musk said. “Some will be like the Model S pack: something flat, 5 inches off the wall, wall mounted, with a beautiful cover, an integrated bi-directional inverter, and plug and play.”

Musk said he will give more details about the home battery system design toward the end of this year or early next year.

Selling its battery packs into the energy storage market would seem a good fit for Tesla, which counts designing battery packs and developing battery management system as part of its core expertise. The battery management system includes sensors and software to manage the charging and discharging of the batteries and to make sure they don’t overheat....

my downfall was that I didn't have enough storage and had to use my generator a lot. This is great news and will revolutionize solar homes.

... access to the brainpower to really get something done in this field. Developing such a battery pack will be a real boon to rooftop solar on many more houses.

All batteries (so far) *must* eventually be replaced.

What are the environmental costs of a bunch of expired lithium batteries?
Edit- We're talking literally tons and tons and tons and TONS of spent lithium.

The batteries on an average Tesla weigh 1,000 pounds. A half ton.

Does Elon Musk plan to recycle these spent batteries? The article doesn't even bring the problem up.

And his "gigafactory" is still a figment of his imagination.
