Hearing that Papua New Guinea’s Tavurvur volcano was about to erupt for the first time since 2006, an Australian couple vacationing in the area hired a boat in order to observe the explosion from the water.

The couple, Phil and Linda McNamara, videotaped the explosion which occurred on August 29, and shared it on Linda’s Facebook page.

In the video the eruption can be seen with the force of the volcanic explosion causing clouds to scud away across the sky. Thirteen seconds later the sound of the explosion reaches the boat jolting both the camera and cameraman.

On Sept. 3, the Washington Post published before and after satellite pictures of the area showing the extent of the ash-fall from the volcano, located near the township of Rabaul in the East New Britain province.
