CNN.com: The climate is ruined. So can civilization even survive?

The climate is ruined. So can civilization even survive?

The idea that we will be safe from "dangerous climate change" if we do not exceed a temperature rise of 2C (3.6F) has been widely accepted. But many informed people have rejected this assumption. In the opinion of journalist-turned-activist Bill McKibben, "the one degree we've raised the temperature already has melted the Arctic, so we're fools to find out what two will do."

His warning is supported by James Hansen, who declared that "a target of two degrees (Celsius) is actually a prescription for long-term disaster."

This catapult is dangerous, because we have no evidence civilization can long survive with significantly higher temperatures. And yet, the world is on a trajectory that would lead to an increase of 4C (7F) in this century. In the opinion of many scientists and the World Bank, this could happen as early as the 2060s.

What would "a 4C world" be like? According to Kevin Anderson of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research (at the University of East Anglia), "during New York's summer heat waves the warmest days would be around 10-12C (18-21.6F) hotter [than today's]." Moreover, he has said, above an increase of 4C only about 10% of the human population will survive.

Believe it or not, some scientists consider Anderson overly optimistic.

The tide is turning on media denial, perhaps.

Most of our differences with conservatives, I can at least understand why we have different opinions, even if I think their reasons are ridiculous in the nicest way of putting it.

This one just really leaves me scratching my head, and going WTF???

I do get that many of them either don't believe climate change is happening, or if they do believe it is happening, don't believe it is man made, or they believe that god will protect them from any harm if it is real if they just prey hard enough (yes I did mean that misspelling).

Ok, so I get they they have no logic or reason.. But really, what I also get about them is that they LOOOOOVE 'merica. That they Hate dem foreign devils, especially those "terr'ists" (which, to them is 23% of the worlds population, or all Muslims.. they'd better hope that they are never right about that.. but I digress on tangent).

Why can't they realize that even if you take all of the benefits this earth would get from going clean and renewable, it would also make their dreams come true about true and complete energy independence?? Even if they don't have the sense of earthworm and completely disbelieve all scientific evidence, this is one of those things that just jumping on board would make their own twisted weird goals come true as well???? For fuck's sake, we go clean, and renewable everyone benefits!!!! Their corporate masters benefit, their children benefit, 'merica benefits, their sacred pocket books benefit.. it's a win.. win... win.. scenario, and they're hell bent on fighting it tooth and nail. I really just don't get it!!!!

We have very dangerous class in this country called billionaires. They are all criminals. You dont get rich by being honest. You get rich by inheriting your first billion and then usin that fortune to destroy every thing in your path. You must be ruthless.
I believe as long as we allow these criminals to continue their destruction, we are all doomed. As long as we drive our consumer crazy culture to the edge of the absurdity lest we become bored for 2 seconds, sooner or later, shit is going to hit the fan.

Allow them? Hell, we encourage them! Pretty much everyone wants a nice Return On Investment, and for their kids to live better than they did. If psychopathic leaders are the price we must pay for the Good Life, so be it!

Prior to that, this was talked about by the GOP leaders as recently as the 2008 campaign (prior to the Citizens United ruling of course.)

If your hope for campaign funds hinges on denying reality, you deny reality.

Check out this much under-noticed video collection of GOP Leaders including Sarah Palin, GW Bush, the Newtster, John McCain, etc.

We get to choose from the choices THEY offer our nation, and your world. And they see no reason to change anything as long as they are filling their pockets.

Many are not even in this country, but they control levers of power. They not only think they are immune to this, they are looking for ways to find more profit from our misery, and there are likely not enough people to make them change before the world is made uninhabitable for many people and animals.

I do think we have hope. But, only if we act asap and recognize this is a crisis. I am shocked that it's taken so long for CNN to wake the f__ up... but grateful it is finally happening.

Some people are waiting for Jesus.
Both are about as likely to happen.
