Medical imaging techniques have been used to explore why making willow trees grow at an angle can vastly improve their biofuel yields. Using micro-CT scans, the team showed that the trees respond to being tilted by producing a sugar-rich, gelatinous fibre, which helps them stay upright.

In 2004, this area was hit very hard by Hurricane Ivan.
Sadly, many of our magnificent oaks were lost, along with a lot of other necessary shade trees.
What is left is many tilting trees.
I have one close to the house that is at a 30 degree angle, and I am amazed it has not fallen, even in strong wind.
Now I know why.
