A massive eruption occurred Wednesday evening at Chile's Calbuco volcano, spewing ash and hot rocks as high as 40,000 feet into the air, according to Argentina's meteorology service.

The blast forced local officials to issue mandatory evacuations for a nearby town, pushing more than 4,000 people from their homes, the Associated Press reported. Regional emergency directors told AP the eruption caught them by surprise.

It was the first eruption at Calbuco in 42 years, and among Chile's active volcanoes, it's considered one of the three most dangerous, AP also reported.
