Peak Fish

Here's an illustration of FRoEI (Fish Returned on Energy Invested), aka Peak Fish.

The global fish catch (blue line) has declined in recent years, even though fleets are spending more effort (orange line) to find fish. Source: Seas Around Us Project

We eat both the wild fish and the farmed ones, and will probably continue to do so as long as there are still wild fish to eat. As we exterminate more of the wild ones, we "replace" them with farmed ones. But it's not really a replacement, is it? Except in human dietary terms.

The point is not feeding humans. The point is the damage we're doing to the biosphere.

And when we do this, we tend to focus on the smaller fish even further down the food chain, causing even more destruction.
