Small Island States To Developed World: If You Can't Do Anything, At Least Help Us Move

Pacific island nations have pleaded with wealthy countries to help their people migrate and find work if they are forced to flee their homelands because of the consequences of climate change.

A coalition of low-lying island nations said moving people because of rising sea levels, storms, and ruined agriculture was a last resort, but the “calamity” of climate change required industrialized countries to devise a plan.

In a joint statement after a summit in Kiribati, the Pacific nations — Fiji, Kiribati, Tuvalu and Tokelau — said they were “gravely concerned over the lack of effective international response to climate change” that posed “major existential challenges” to their populations and cultures.

They repeated calls for an international body to be set up to coordinate population movement caused by climate change. The creation of such a body was included in an early draft of a U.N. agreement to be negotiated at climate talks in Paris in December, but the idea was dropped last week. Australia opposed it, although countries including Britain, the U.S., and France were open to the concept.
