And no, just saying that it is trying to make a point doesn't make it any less stupid. There are ways to make the point without being absurd.

It is virtually impossible for us to destroy the hunk of rock we’re sitting on. But, in a very real sense, the planet is so much more.

If I were to say, “he destroyed his liver with his drinking” does that mean he physically no longer has a liver in his body?
