In 1979 President Carter signed into law a number of measures that would:

Make America 100% energy independent by the year 2000
Promote solar energy
Promote wind energy
Promote battery research and electric cars
Provide assistance to make homes more energy efficient (insulation, etc)

When Pres. Reagan took office in 1980 he began immediately and tirelessly to erase all of those measures from the books.

So here we are today, 32 years later and already suffering the consequences of those decisions, thanks to one man: President Ronald Reagan. RIP.

He got elected twice and the majority of people were happy to participate in an oil-fueled consumption party at the planet's expense.

...I'm still working out the details, but it basically involves being too drunk to notice.

The death of the oceans, the risks to the global food supply from changing rainfall patterns, soil depletion and dropping aquifers, the growing global economic instability...

I wonder if they are in fact aware of the extent of the crisis, and that's driving the pessimistic tone of the report.

I don't see any way we're going to be able to avert widespread famines in the next 20 years as food production is crippled by climate change

We seem to have coasted to 7B easily enough. I'm sure we can fuck up that badly if we try hard enough.
