Safety worries shut down San Onofre nuclear plant

Los Angeles -- A nuclear reactor on the Southern California coast will remain shut down indefinitely while a team of federal inspectors determines why several relatively new tubes became so frail that tests found they could rupture and release radioactive water, a federal official said Thursday.

According to the article, both Units 2 and 3 both had those tubes installed. They shut down #3 due to a radioactive steam reelase due to these deffective tubes, fortunately Unit 2 was already shut down for maintenance.

So it appears we don't need an earthquake or a tsunami to cause problems, all we need is a contractor who supplies defective materials! Although a strong earthquake in this area is a definate probability.

Oh and unit one was already decomissoned, dismantled and encased in concrete and steel.

What do you wanna bet, SDG&E will use this as an excuse to raise rates?
