Related: About this forumSixteen Myths about Population Growth
This is a long(ish), in-depth look at all the bullshit that gets smeared around regarding overpopulation. While I don't think there's going to be a timely, effective, managed solution to the population problem, it's still good to strip away the veils of ignorance and obfuscation and at least talk about the issue realistically.
Many of the policies and spending priorities aimed at curbing population growth have been based on a combination of inadequate data, wishful thinking and faulty logic. To resolve some of the misconceptions about population issues, there is a need for expanded scientific research using experimental designs to gather conclusive evidence about the relative effects of various approaches to curbing population growth.
Someone once said, Hell is truth, seen too late. Many policy makers and funders have been reluctant to recognize overwhelming evidence that some of their pet beliefs are countered by impressive evidence.
The predominant myths about population include:
> Misconceptions about the nature of the problem
> The belief that population growth poses no threat
> The belief we cannot do anything about population growth; and
> Beliefs about simple approaches that are mistakenly believed to hold promise of a quick fix to the population problem
1. Myth: Population growth has occurred at current levels over many centuries

(7,947 posts)We've gotten very good at it too, we just haven't solved it. All of our tricks have gotten us to this point. Convoluted would be a good word for our reality.

(23,730 posts)in fact it was a deliberate policy around the world, especially in French-trained intelligentsia, with the goal of reaching European levels of density (so we can have the same economy as Europe! the logic's airtight!) or just breed more soldiers: it's a typical white elephant, like building stadiums with more seats than there are people in the village it's in, pissing races with dams, multimillion beauty pageants, Concorde stops in the jungle, city-renaming, or ethnic cleansing!

(23,867 posts)I just had a very interesting chat with some people during an interview this morning. It's stunning how out of touch even educated progressives are on this subject. We are in the dark.
I found a lot of support for my beliefs in that article. Rather comprehensive look at the subject.
Thanks!
