Nine dead in air raid on area inhabited by Yemeni ex-leader's relatives

SANAA (Reuters) - Nine people were killed when Saudi-led coalition warplanes bombed a district in the Yemeni capital Sanaa inhabited by relatives of ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh, residents and medics said.

The air raid, which also wounded at least 60 people, came ahead of planned U.N.-sponsored talks in Geneva aimed at ending Yemen's conflict that has drawn in regional powers, including the world's top oil exporter Saudi Arabia.

Residents said the warplanes had targeted vacant houses in Bait Me'yad, a district near the heart of Sanaa that is home to a number of relatives of Saleh, whose loyalists are allied with Houthi forces, the dominant armed faction in the conflict.

Mohammed Yahya, an eyewitness, said two missiles struck two Saleh relatives' houses while the third crashed in the middle of the neighborhood, causing several casualties. Another witness said three explosions shook the neighborhood.

A Saudi Arabian Air Force commander, reported to have died from a heart attack, was actually killed by a Houthi cross-border attack earlier this month, according to an Israeli intelligence and military website.

On Wednesday, the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) quoted the following statement issued by the Ministry of Defense:

"The Commander of Saudi Royal Air Forces Lieutenant General Mohammed bin Ahmed Al-Shaalan died today during a working trip outside the Kingdom due to a heart attack."

The Saudi-based Arab News site similarly noted that the Air Force commander was on a "business trip outside the Kingdom" when he died, though no additional details were provided about the nature of the trip, its purpose, or duration.

2. Saudi citizen at mosque killed in cross-border shelling from Yemen

A Saudi citizen was killed and another injured near the Yemen border on Friday by shelling from forces loyal to former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh and Houthi rebels, Saudi civil defense forces said.

The shelling occurred after Friday prayers as people were leaving a mosque in the southwestern Saudi border area of Jizan and parts of the mosque were damaged, a statement on the official Saudi news agency SPA said

An alliance of Gulf Arab nations has been bombing Houthi militia and army units loyal to former president Saleh that control much of Yemen since March 26 in what they say is an attempt to restore exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi.

Saudi forces and the Houthis have been trading fire across the border since the Arab alliance began its military operations.

And Iranian media, while better, is still very imaginative. So you can't tell what was going on until information filters out later.

The main thing I'm worried about is that Iran stays out of it and doesn't get into direct combat with the Saudis.

At some point, if not already, the Saudis are likely to try to make the war bigger because what they are doing now goes nowhere and makes them look impotent. And IS is going to come for them one of these days.

The Houthis are sort of like the Kurds, old, mountain people, but better armed, and allied with Saleh, and there is serious bad blood between them and the Saudis going way back.

I don't see any sign that it will end soon, weeks, months, years, it's all possible. Something like Syria becomes likely if it goes on, too, so I think we are headed for a Syria-like scenario, in fact I think we are there.

5. INSIGHT-Ground force push by Yemen's Hadi faces uphill task

ADEN/DUBAI, June 14 (Reuters) - Crawling under barbed wire and leaping over burning tyres, dozens of bare-chested young fighters train in a barren part of central Yemen, preparing to head to the frontlines of their country's worsening conflict.

Less than 100 miles (150 km) away in Aden, former army officers are readying a separate contingent of volunteers to join a war that has put the energy-rich Gulf on edge.

Recruited by different factions, both units are set to fight side by side, joining a push by exiled President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi to create a ground force capable of regaining power from dominant Houthi fighters, who are backed by Iran.

The intensive training, recorded on a video posted on Facebook, is recognition that relentless airstrikes coordinated by Hadi's Saudi allies will not be enough to turn the tide against the Houthis, who have taken over much of Yemen in the past nine months and sent the president fleeing.
