South Africa police accused over Marikana mine deaths

15 minutes ago Africa

South African police had a "defective" plan to break up a strike at a platinum mine, which led to the deaths of 34 miners, an inquiry has found.

President Jacob Zuma said a commission into the deaths at the Marikana mine in August 2012 concluded the police were wrong to go ahead with their plan.

Police have always claimed self-defence over the shooting of the workers during a protest over wages.

It was the worst violence in South Africa since the end of apartheid.
