Report: German Patriots in southern Turkey hacked

German Patriot missiles deployed by the German government on the Turkish-Syrian border to protect NATO ally Turkey from attacks from Syria have reportedly been hacked by an outside source and carried out "unexplained commands."

According to the report by German civil service magazine Behörden Spiegel, the control of the German Patriot missile system stationed as part of the NATO mission to secure the Turkish border with Syria was briefly taken over by unknown hackers.

A spokesman for the German Federal Ministry of Defense has denied the allegations of hacked missiles, telling German newspaper Die Welt that there is no evidence that such an incident had taken place.

The report does not specify any details about the orders given to the system from outside, but says that hackers may have gained access to the missile system through the digital space of the so-called sensor-shooter interoperability, which is the standardized data exchange between control and weapon systems in real-time conditions.
