While President Obama tells the world to "look forward, not backward" when it comes to CIA's torture program, the United Nations has taken a different route. The UN Human Rights Committee has issued a new report excoriating the US for its human rights violations. It focuses on violations of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which the country is party.
The report mentions numerous human rights issues where the US is failing:
Guantanamo,
NSA surveillance,
accountability for human rights violations,
drone strikes,
racism in the prison system,
racial profiling,
police violence, and
criminalization of the homeless.
According to the damning report, the US is still involved in serious human rights violations. In particular, the assessment measures US implementation of the committee's recommendations for improving its human rights record.
Far from it, the US performance has been poor, given failing grade. The failing grade suggests the US has a long way to go before it is in compliance with international law.
