EU to announce end of Iran sanctions on Sunday: sources

Amman, Oct. 17 (Petra)-- The EU will announce Sunday the formal end to damaging economic sanctions imposed on Iran over its nuclear program which the West feared would give Tehran the atomic bomb, Western diplomatic sources said.

They said the decision will take effect around the end of the year after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) certifies that Iran has met its commitments under a landmark July accord with the major powers to curb its nuclear program in return for lifting sanctions.

In Tehran, the official Iranian News Agency (IRNA) said EU foreign affairs head Federica Mogherini and her Iranian counterpart Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif would issue a statement on Sunday, AFP said.

Iran's recent ballistic missile test was "a clear violation" of U.N. sanctions, and the United States will seek action from the Security Council, U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power said Friday.

Power said that after reviewing available information, the United States has confirmed that the medium-range ballistic missile launched on Oct. 10 was "inherently capable of delivering a nuclear weapon." She said this violated a U.N. Security Council resolution adopted on June 9, 2010, which imposed a fourth round of sanctions on Iran.

Oct 17 German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier urged Iran on Saturday to use its influence over Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to move towards a diplomatic end to Syria's civil war.

Steinmeier, on a four-day trip to the Middle East, travels to Saudi Arabia on Sunday and is using his meetings to weigh up how to bring Tehran and Riyadh into talks to reach a solution to the four-year-old Syrian conflict.

Tehran has armed the Syrian government and, through its backing of Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, has helped Assad combat rebels seeking to end his rule.

"My wish is that Iran uses its influence in the government and on Assad and his entourage so that we take the first steps towards a de-escalation in Syria," he said in Tehran on the first official visit to Iran by a German foreign minister in more than 10 years.
