SANA'A/CAIRO
The numbers vary, but the story they tell is clear: The cyclone in Yemen has destroyed almost everything in its path.
And some residents say between the ongoing war and the abject poverty that dominates the nation, they are growing terrified of the future.
All people here are very scared because the situation was already very bad due to the war and the control al-Qaida has on our city, said Shehab Hazem, a 23-year-old fisherman from Mukalla. And now we have the cyclone, which has made it much worse.
The U.N. refugee agency estimates more than 1 million people are impacted by the storm that is reported to have dumped years worth of rain on Yemen in a matter of days.

(84,711 posts)Which has somehow gotten off it's BUTT to report "International Weather" due to some conflict with "Weather Underground's Owner" who sold it off to "Time Warner Cable" but, managed to get enough Stock in the Deal that he has held true to his Principles. I'm speaking about "Weather Underground Founder" ....Dr. Jeff Masters who has been "On About Global Warming" since he founded "WU" way back. There are still a FEW GOOD FOLKS out there!
Yemen becomes the "Forgotten Front"...in the Negotiations over Syria...it seems. Yet the News gets out there for people who Seek.
Thank You for the Post!

(90,061 posts)When we cannot even get together to govern ourselves about such obvious issues as preserving our ecosystems and our species historical record, not depleting away all of our non-renewables, not littering the planet with plastic crap, ...
And Yemen means more refugees, lots of them. Did you know refugees from the Horn of Africa are still (or were anyway) coming to Yemen for refuge?

(84,711 posts)What a disaster. I've not seen anything about a massive effort to get relief in there, either. I guess with the war going on its not considered an option.
I wonder if the destruction of the Middle East will go down in history as another "War to End all Wars" when the books are written revealing the personal stories of the misery and suffering that has gone on there. At some point we are going to start approaching WW II numbers as to devastation for the population and ruin of infrastructure. Who will write the stories and script the documentaries? From what I've observed there isn't much empathy interest and there's no shock value that resonates enough with people news media or governments to even try to begin to investigate to make sure this never happens again.
In the meantime, where can the money for aid come from to help the Yemini's deal with a natural disaster on top of a war and for the rest of the immigrants flooding into Europe to manage to begin to recreate some kind of normal life again. With Europe and USA still dealing with austerity measures for their own populations...there's not much extra floating around from taxpayers. Maybe Silicon Valley and Foundations will step in.
